WASHINGTON, D.C. – Council on National Security and Immigration leaders released the following statement ahead of the 10th anniversary of the announcement of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) this week:

“The 10th anniversary of DACA is a dubious milestone” said former National Guardsman and DHS official Ross Ashley. “The U.S. Congress allowed a decade to pass without creating a way for Dreamers to earn permanent legal status. Lawmakers should act now by passing legislation that grants legal permanent residence to Dreamers and an eventual earned pathway to citizenship.”

Former DHS official Dan Brown added that “Dreamers, and all Americans who depend on them, deserve the protections, certainty and security that such legislation would provide. Immigrants, including Dreamers, are essential contributors to our communities, our economy, and our military. Dreamers have demonstrated themselves as true Americans, and their contributions bolster U.S. national security. A permanent solution for Dreamers would allow them to contribute even more by allowing many more of them to serve in the military and  other national security spaces.”

Hans Miller, a former Homeland Security Advisory Council member called on lawmakers to act. “Democrats and Republicans have a track record of uniting and solving issues when our national security demands it. Congress must take action now to permanently protect and support DACA recipients and other Dreamers.”
