Washington — The Council on National Security and Immigration (CNSI) today released the following statement after the House voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:
“Tonight’s House vote is unprecedented and unfortunate. Senators must vote against convicting Secretary Mayorkas.
“Congress’ full attention should be on effective solutions to secure our border. A conviction does nothing to resolve current border and immigration challenges and threatens to compromise national security.
“The recent bipartisan negotiations on a border and immigration package are the kinds of conversations we still need urgently. Legislators should be working together to improve order and security, not setting a dangerous precedent that could weaken the federal department tasked with protecting the homeland.
“We urge the Senate to reject an impeachment drive based on policy differences and vote ‘not guilty.’ Senators should instead focus on finding practical border and immigration solutions.”
